Voyiazis – Photoshop Final + Progress

Elements of Design Used:

Color: The main colors I tried to incorporate into my collage are blue and white. While these aren’t complementary colors, I was focused on using them because they symbolize the colors of the Greek Flag. The background and border colors’ opacity was changed in order to make their tones more grey and subtle.

Texture: One of my goals for this project was to use as many elements relating to Greece in conjunction with each other. This is evident in the background layers. I tried to merge the white horizon line of the sea with a slab of white marble in order to make it seem as if the two textures were merging and became one without a definitive border between them. I also thought that this would work out quite nicely because the white marble looks a bit like the sky on a cloudy day. I also though that including an overlay of olive branches and basil leaves would also give a very distinct texture to a small portion of the collage, without making the center feel too congested.

Central Focal Point: While I did include a fluid background and a distinct border, my intention was that the observers’ eyes be drawn to the central objects and then notice the finer details such as the foliage and background. I wanted my drawing of an ionic column to be the central image with other symbols of Greece behind it.

Scale/Proportion: One of my goals was to make the entire collage feel like a poster that had elements projecting out to you. My first two designs felt too flat and compiled, but through the use of layer overlap, I was able to increase the size of my standout layer and then put other objects behind each other to make them look as if they were going back in space along with the horizon line of the sky.

Symmetry: The final aspect of design I tried to use was symmetry. Even though it is being viewed from the side, the column is a symmetrical piece of art. I tried to continue this theme through the outfacing bouzouki instrument and bottle. I also incorporate more symmetry through the use of the olive branch crown, and the outside border. Also, as evident in my first two collages, I tried to make the basil leaves symmetrical by placing one in each of the four corners. I decided to put them in one corner to because there was too much symmetry and the cluster of leaves gave a more abstract feeling.

  1. Kosta, This project was celebration of your Greek heritage, as was the entire semester. It was wonderful to see how your content evolved from the strong Negative Space shape of the Greek architecture, to the Notan design with Greek helmet to the final Digital Collage.

Could you please add your 5 Design Element description to this post? See Dan’s or Maggie’s for examples.
